Number to Words Converter
Spell out any whole number as words, in both the Indian (lakh/crore) and international (million/billion) systems.
twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven
one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven
How it works
The number is split into place-value groups and each group is spelled out with standard English number words, hyphenating compound tens like "sixty-seven" and never using "and". The Indian system groups digits into crore, lakh, thousand and hundreds (as used on Indian cheques and payslips); the international system groups the same number into billion, million and thousand — the two differ only in how the middle digits are bundled, not in the underlying value.
Example
12,34,567 (Indian grouping) is "twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven", while the same 1,234,567 read the international way is "one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven" — both describe the identical number.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there two different outputs for the same number?
India groups large numbers by lakh (10^5) and crore (10^7); most other countries group by thousand, million (10^6) and billion (10^9). Both are shown so you can use whichever matches your document.
Does it handle decimals?
No — this tool converts whole numbers only, which covers the common use case of writing an amount on a cheque or invoice.
What is the largest number supported?
Up to 99,99,99,999 (about 10 billion) — large enough for virtually any personal or business amount.
Why no "and" between hundred and the rest?
This follows the plain, unambiguous style used on financial documents — "one hundred twenty-three", not "one hundred and twenty-three".
