Reading time (min)

How it works

Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace; sentences by terminal punctuation (., ! or ?) followed by a space or the end of the text; paragraphs by blank lines. Reading time assumes an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, rounded to the nearest minute with a one-minute minimum.

Example

A typical college essay of 1,500 words is about 8 minutes of reading. Paste it in and you also instantly see the character count that Twitter/X, meta descriptions or SMS limits care about.

Frequently asked questions

Do numbers and symbols count as words?

Any run of non-space characters counts as one word — "2026" and "$100" are each one word.

How accurate is the sentence count?

It counts terminal punctuation, so abbreviations like "e.g." can add a sentence. For normal prose it is very close.

What reading speed is used?

200 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading. Skimmers go faster, technical text slower.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser as you type; the text never leaves your device.
