Percentage to CGPA

CGPA (out of 10)

Uses the CBSE 10-point-scale convention (percentage = CGPA × 9.5). Other boards and universities may use a different formula — check yours before relying on this for admissions or applications.

How it works

CBSE (the Central Board of Secondary Education in India) publishes a widely used formula for its 10-point CGPA scale: percentage = CGPA × 9.5. The reverse direction divides the percentage by 9.5 to estimate the equivalent CGPA. This 9.5 multiplier is specific to CBSE's own grading conventions, not a universal mathematical relationship.

Example

A CGPA of 8.2 converts to 77.9% under the CBSE formula. Going the other way, a 76% score corresponds to a CGPA of exactly 8.0 — the same 9.5 factor applied in reverse.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 9.5 multiplier used everywhere?

No — this is specifically CBSE's own conversion formula for its 10-point CGPA scale. Other boards, universities and countries use different scales and multipliers (or no fixed conversion at all), so always check the issuing institution's own formula before relying on this for admissions or job applications.

Why 9.5 and not exactly 10?

CBSE chose 9.5 based on analysis of historical marks distributions when it introduced the CGPA system, rather than a simple 10x scale — it is a board policy decision, not a mathematical constant.

Does every Indian university accept this formula?

No — some universities apply their own conversion tables or accept CGPA directly without converting to percentage; check the specific requirement before submitting an application.

Is this reversible without rounding error?

Mathematically yes, but real transcripts round CGPA and percentage to a fixed number of decimals, so converting back and forth can differ from the original by a small amount.
